Green card to Hungary

Ukrainians often start their trip to Europe by crossing the Ukrainian-Hungarian border. If you have chosen this route, take care of the Green Card to Hungary in advance. You need an international car insurance policy for several reasons, which we will discuss below.

Why is a Green Card mandatory?

Hungary is on the list of countries where an agreement on the international settlement of insurance events is in force. Accordingly, in order for you to receive insurance compensation in the event of an accident, you need a valid Green Card. This policy must be issued in Ukraine, the country of registration of the vehicle, and it will be valid in Hungary.

Each country has its own insurance limits for the Green Card. For Hungary, they are €5,123,771 for personal injury and €1,601,178 for material damage, i.e. a damaged vehicle. The amount of compensation will be calculated within these limits.

The lack of an insurance policy threatens the vehicle owner with a fine. Each country sets its own amount. In Hungary, it is 90,000 Hungarian forints (about €240). In particular, it says that every foreign vehicle must be insured in accordance with EU Directive 2009/103/EC.

What documents are required to apply for a Green Card?

You can buy a Green Card when you know exactly which car you are driving to Hungary and how long you will stay in the country. This information is required to apply for a Green Card. Also prepare:

• a driver's license or a company registration certificate (for vehicles registered to a legal entity);
• a vehicle registration certificate.

Can I buy insurance online?

The legislation stipulates that the driver must have a printed original insurance policy. However, after the start of hostilities in Ukraine, it is possible to confirm the validity of such insurance if there is an electronic analogue. For which vehicles is a Green Card required?

The law stipulates, in particular for a trip to Hungary, that a Green Card is required for the following vehicles:

• passenger car;
• motorcycle and scooter;
• passenger bus;
• truck;
• trailer and trailer.

The cost for each category will differ. The amount is also affected by the term of the policy - it is permissible from 15 days to 1 year. At the same time, for all insurance companies in Ukraine, MTIBU has established unified tariffs, which means that the price for the same parameters should not differ among insurers. Only two countries for which the tariff is different are listed separately - Azerbaijan and Moldova.
