Green card for a car online

The traffic rules abroad are somewhat different from Ukrainian ones, but this does not protect against accidents. Accordingly, before leaving Ukraine, you need to apply for a Green Card for a car online.

Why buy a green card for a car?

This document is included in the list of mandatory documents, and border guards can check the availability of a policy when crossing the border. The Green Card's effect in European countries is regulated by EU Directive 2009/103/EC. This document obliges all owners of vehicles with foreign registration to have an international insurance policy. It applies to vehicles and third-party liability in the event of an accident.

How to apply for a Green Card?

By law, you must have a printed Green Card on the original form approved by the MTIBU. However, due to military operations in Ukraine, you can confirm the validity of such insurance if you have an electronic equivalent, for example, a PDF file with a Green Card. Right now you can apply for it online:

• on the Parasol.ua website, in the Green Card section, simply enter the details of the car you plan to cross the border with;
• the system will select insurance companies where you can apply for a policy;
• choose an insurance company, enter all the necessary information;
• pay using a bank card (we took care of the security of your payment);
• wait for the delivery of the original policy via an express carrier.

In this option, purchasing a Green Card will take up to 5 minutes.

A single tariff applies to all insurance companies, which means that the cost of insurance is affected by only two parameters - the type of vehicle and the duration of your stay abroad, i.e. the validity of the policy (possibly from 15 days to 12 months).

Insurance limits in different countries

In each country where the Green Card is valid, insurance claims are settled in accordance with local legislation. In addition, each country has its own insurance limits and principles for calculating them. For example, for an accident involving a passenger car in Switzerland, a single minimum amount of €4 600 662 (5 million Swiss francs) is provided for per accident. At the same time, most countries have separate minimum limits for compensation for injuries and for property payments. According to MTIBU, for example, in Germany it is €7.5 million and €1.12 million respectively, in Spain it is €70 million and €15 million, in France it is unlimited and €1.22 million, and in Moldova it is €255,838 and €1 million.

What to do if an accident occurs?

Recommended actions for the insured in the event of an accident abroad:

• record the scene of the accident;
• call the police;
• obtain a police report on the circumstances of the accident;
• if you are not the one at fault in the accident, you should also ask the police for a photocopy of the at-fault party's international car insurance card, which states that it was he who caused the accident on the road.

It happens that the foreign driver at fault does not have insurance coverage at the time of the accident or the accident occurred due to involving drivers from different countries on the territory of a third country. In such cases, you should contact the national bureau of the country of the accident directly (current contact details are indicated on the back of the Green Card insurance certificate).

Thus, having an international insurance policy becomes your financial protection, and also eliminates the penalties provided for the absence of a green card.
