Green card online

Car insurance is a must when traveling from Ukraine to a number of countries. A Green Card policy issued online actually becomes an analogue of the civil motor insurance policy that you use within our country. We tell you how to choose insurance for your car so as not to have problems abroad in the event of an accident.

Where is the Green Card issued online valid?

The international Green Card car insurance system has existed since 1949. It was created on the basis of the Recommendation of the Working Group on Road Transport of the Committee on Inland Transport of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. This agreement provides that a number of countries have uniform insurance conditions for vehicles.

This applies to those countries where:

• motor vehicle third party liability insurance is mandatory;
• there is a National Bureau, which includes insurers that provide such insurance;
• the legality of the requirements of this system has been officially recognized.

Ukraine joined the International System in 1997 and remains a member. The full list of countries where the Green Card is valid is published on the MTIBU website.

What does the Green Card provide?

First of all, it is a guarantee that in the event of a road accident, the party injured in the accident will be able to claim insurance compensation. Payment will be made in accordance with the legislation on compulsory civil liability insurance of car owners of the country where the insured event occurred.

The international insurance certificate Green Card has a unified form in all countries. 

A National Bureau operates in each country that is part of the International System. It is the only competent organization on all issues related to compensation for damages caused by the fault of a non-resident driver in the territory of such a country.

How to insure a car for traveling abroad?

To avoid taking a long time to apply for a Green Card, we recommend using online insurance. It is fast and convenient: you fill in all your details on the website, pay for the policy and receive it to the specified contact email. Due to military operations in Ukraine, it is now possible not to have the original Green Card on hand (which was a mandatory requirement until February 24, 2022). After purchasing the policy, the data about the insured is entered into Green Card online — a subsystem of MTIBU, through which the information is transferred to the central database. And when checking your insurance outside Ukraine, it will be clear that your vehicle is insured.

Compare prices and inquire about their business reputation. This will help you choose the most reliable insurer in the event that yours does not provide such a service.

Go to the Green Card section and for an approximate calculation, enter:

• type of vehicle;
• country or countries where you are going to travel;
• term of validity of the insurance policy (must coincide with the period of stay outside Ukraine).

The system will select the existing options itself: it will show the cost of insurance, how many policies have been calculated and already purchased from a specific insurer during the day.

Thus, when planning a trip abroad in your own vehicle, take care of purchasing a Green Card in advance. At a minimum, you will need time to go to the insurance company or wait for the courier.
