What to do if your luggage is delayed at the airport

Luggage delay is an unpleasant but fairly common occurrence. The most common factors for baggage delay or loss are late check-in or short transfers. Try to avoid both. It is advisable that the transfer time is no less than an hour and a half.

If you still do not see your suitcase on the baggage claim line, then the sequence of actions is as follows:

1. Look for a sign in the airport arrivals hall with the inscription «Baggage Search», «Lost and Found" or "Lost baggage", "Baggage Service".
2. Contact an employee of this service; if this happened abroad, it is enough to say - Excuse me. I have lost my baggage, help me, please.
3. Show the baggage receipt attached to the boarding pass - BaggageTag and passport.
4. Fill out the form issued by the baggage tracking service employee. In it, you need to describe the suitcase and leave personal data, including the address where the luggage will need to be delivered. After filling out the form, you will be given a document with the date, application number and details of the employee who accepted it.  

If the luggage was sent on another flight (in the right direction, but later or the direction was mixed up), then you will receive it within 1-2 days. In most countries, things will be brought to the hotel free of charge.

In no case do not lose the baggage receipt! Without it, there will be additional problems and delays in time.

After 5 days, the search for the suitcase will be taken seriously and you will be asked to fill out a description of its contents. The luggage will be recognized as lost after 21 days. Then all that remains is to write a claim for compensation, since the airline carrier is responsible for your luggage during the flight. Application forms can be picked up at the airport. 

According to the Warsaw Convention, which is adhered to by most airlines in the world, if your luggage is lost, the airline will pay you compensation in the amount of 15 to 25 dollars per kilogram of weight. 

We perform a simple mathematical operation and see that the maximum compensation for a standard suitcase weight of 20 kg will be 500 dollars. It's good if your things together with the suitcase cost about that much. And what if only the suitcase costs 500 dollars? And there's also a Chanel dress in it, weighing 300 grams and costing under a thousand euros?  And a couple of similar things. Will you be satisfied with compensation from the airline in this case? Hardly. That's what baggage insurance is for.

If you insured your baggage and it was delayed for more than 4 hours, you can already count on a payment of 200 euros.
