Insurance companies are panicking, Tesla's autopilot will deprive them of profits

1863

After the launch of the autopilot system, the number of accidents involving Tesla electric cars decreased by 40%. Over time, the company's self-driving software will make driving so safe that insurance will require minimal costs. Insurance services have already begun to prepare for the onslaught of technology that has every chance of disrupting the existing market.

Tesla already sells electric cars in Australia and Hong Kong, the cost of which includes insurance and maintenance. Over time, the company will automatically include insurance in the price of the car, and electric car buyers will not have to spend time and money choosing an insurance agent.

The package offer is not the only threat to Tesla's insurance business. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), after the installation of the autopilot function, the number of accidents involving Tesla electric cars decreased by 40%. According to NHTSA statistics, 94% of accidents in the US are caused by humans. Autopilot systems can change this figure.

Once the company introduces an improved version of autopilot, this figure may increase by several dozen percent. Tesla CEO Elon Musk expects that the increase in the safety of drones will force insurance companies to reduce the prices of their services.

According to the auditing firm KPMG, in 25 years, as drone technologies spread, the private auto insurance market will decrease by 40%. The responsibility for accidents will not be borne by the car owner, but by the manufacturer. Volvo has already stated that it will be responsible for any incidents involving its drones. However, the final degree of responsibility will be determined by the regulator in each country. As Business Insider notes, the rules will be established as a result of court precedents.

Drones will not only reduce insurance costs, but will also generally help save money in various areas. According to a report by the think tank Securing America's Future Energy and the Ruderman Family Foundation, the spread of drones would save $19 billion annually in healthcare. In total, robo-vehicles would save up to $1.3 trillion by increasing productivity, reducing fuel costs, and reducing the number of accidents.
